One weekend a month we open the studio to people wishing to learn how to work with leather. We teach traditional techniques using hand tools and naturally tanned leather. The course includes a 2 hour theory session and practical demonstration of how leather is made, and 2 full days of practical workshop based teaching. The course dates which still have spaces are shown on the right of this page.

Leatherwork Basic Skills
Duration: Evening 6-8pm and 2 full days.

Price includes materials. If personal project uses more than the average amount of materials there will be an additional charge.
Theory Session 2hrs
Introduction to course, participants and workshop.
An investigation into different leathers, parts of a hide and their uses in leatherwork.
Practical session 2 days - 14 hrs :
1. Make a hand stitched Belt, 2. Make a Turned Pouch with belt loop or shoulder strap.
1. Strap cutting, edge finishing, hole punching.
2. Buckles, crew punching, riveting, use of splitting machine, hand stitching with linen thread and 2 needles
3. Pattern making technique.
4. T base bag technique with turned seams, stitching with awl and 1 needle,
5. Setting rivets and press stud fasteners.
The Basic Skills Course is designed to equip the student with skills. The two items incorporate different techniques which form a basis for ongoing study, practice and experimentation.
Techniques taught are those used in traditional bridlemaking. Students wanting tuition in equestrian leatherwork will find this course an ideal resource

Bag Construction and Design

Bag design and construction
The course is less structured than the Basic Skills. You will be in a coaching environment with others who share your enthusiasm to design and create . This is an opportunity for you to indulge in 4 uninterrupted days of leatherwork. Bring your completed projects for peer appraisal and discover new ideas and techniques to support you in developing your own individual style and feel.

All courses - What to bring
If you have a specific project in mind prepare a rough pattern beforehand with sizes. If you want to make a case or cover for something specific bring it with you.
Note taking kit, camera or video.
Our courses are 2 or 4 full days 9-5. The studio is in a rural location so please bring your own packed lunch. Tea and good coffee on tap throughout the day.
